MEMORIALS

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals,
Especially for animals who are suffering,
For any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry,
For all that must be put to death,
We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity,
And for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends of the animals and so share the blessings of the merciful.

Miss Sadie Mae
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
15 October 2003
Miss Sadie Mae was a wonderful senior Boston whose owner turned her into a shelter in Hammond, Louisiana, because she was sick with Cushing’s Syndrome, for which there is no known cure. Alabama Boston Terrier Rescue gave her a loving home in June 2002. It was later that she began Lysodren therapy to manage her disease, and she passed away within a week after beginning therapy. Miss Sadie Mae was a wonderful and most loving lady, who maintained her dignity until the very end.

Oscar
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
3 November 2003

Oscar was a stout senior Boston. He was doing so much better, and then took a drastic turn for the worse over the past weekend. By morning, his left hind leg and right front leg were completely edematous. He was having a lot of trouble breathing, and had not eaten in two days. He was not able stand up anymore. He was just suffering so much, it just broke my heart. I held Oscar in my lap while Dr. Strickland put him to sleep. I hope he felt happy and loved in his last minutes.

Little Miss Ellie Mae
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
10 November 2003
Little Miss Ellie Mae was brought into the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter in a malnourished state. After an extensive examination at the Auburn Veterinary School, a malignant tumor was found in her colon, which was causing significant bleeding. We were told there was nothing that could be done for her, except just to keep her comfortable. The bleeding continued, and her condition worsened. It was decided that she had suffered long enough, and her time had come to cross the Rainbow Bridge. She was never a minute’s trouble; and all other problems aside, she just wanted love.

Miss Penny
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
26 January 2004
Alden, our friend next door, took John, my son, to the Ace Hardware and helped him build a fine casket--one finished with handles and a nice cross on the top. She is buried with her favorite collar and baby blanket. Our friends came to be with us while we buried her, and we told Penny tales. She was a special personality--from sucking on the baby's pacifier to eating paper. There will never be another Penny--always thinking about something and doing it. The other dogs are taking it hard, especially Smokey, who saw her hit by a car in front our our house. They were allowed to smell her and say good-bye. I am not sure i will ever quit crying. We decided that Penny had belonged to an older lady who lived in an apartment. We had to train her to go potty on the grass, as she preferred the sidewalk. She also hated to walk at night and would sit down when we went to the park for our nightly walks. She was afraid of men in suits, and it took her several months before she would accept David when he had a suit on. One night, when she was in the bed with me and David was coming up the stairs, she stood at the top barking at him; and when he got to the landing, she did an about face and ran back jumped on the bed and dug under the covers to my feet. She always slept under the covers at my feet. I loved that little warm body there. John would beg her to sleep with him; and when he came for her, she would hide and be real still. She finally compromised and would go to bed with me, and then John would come for her. She would sleep with him until early morning and then run to be with me. She was loaded with personality and kept us all in line. She loved to stand with her feet on the tub to watch the other dogs be bathed. She loved to chase squirrels and would tree them until i picked her up and brought her inside. She was Woodrow's only Boston friend. Although Woodrow fought with Buster and Benjamen, Penny was not afraid of him and taught him how to play. They were close friends. Every morning she irritated me when begging for my shredded wheat, so i would fix her a bowl. This morning I will miss that.

He was the perfect Boston gentleman. He was our first Boston and loved and spoiled extensively from the day we brought him home until he passed away from smoke inhalation when we lost our home to a house fire.

Molly
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
8 March 1993 - 10 March 2003
Molly graced our lives in July of 1993 (our first child) when she was 4 months old. She had spent 2 months of her life in a pet shop - finally I couldn't stand it any longer and had to purchase her. When she was about 2 yrs old, we obtained another Boston to whom she was a wonderful 'mother' to, constantly grooming her as if she was her own puppy. Nine years flew by, it seems, with this wonderful little girl. She was always so obedient and just wanted to please. Her favorite past time was chasing her tennis ball, dinnertime, constantly barking until I was finished preparing her meal, and just being with us. She was a great traveler, never complaining in the car. Just before her 9th birthday a lump was discovered behind her right ear which turned out to be cancerous, specifically bone cancer. She had 4 surgeries during that year and recuperated very well after each, however, the tumor came back more rapidly the last time so we let nature take her course. I feel God must have needed her more up there. She was held by her 'Daddy' whom she loved so much while she was put down, so I hope that comforted her. She was the kindest, sweetest dog we've ever had the pleasure of knowing, and miss her very, very much. I'm comforted to know, though, that she is in a better place where she can run hard and bark loud! We love you Molly, see you again some day.

Miss Sarah Phoebe
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
18 March 2004
Sarah Phoebe was a wonderful, sweet five-year-old little girl whom we rescued from the Jasper Animal Shelter. She was a pretty little thing who loved to sit in your lap and cuddle. Sarah Phoebe died suddenly after being with us only a week; but in that short time, she stole our hearts and touched everyone whom she met with that sweet little face.

Miss Lucy Lou
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
21 April 2004

Friday, January 9, 2004, Limestone County Dog Pound called ABTR about me, an old female Boston with breast cancer. Mrs. Evelyn Bibb told them she would help me so that I would not die alone in a shelter. She came and got me and carried me to her vet. He took off a tumor the size of a grapefruit that was draining, and I wasn't a pretty sight, or smell. I almost died on the operating table, but I really wanted to live. Miss Evelyn carried me home with her and gave me plenty of TLC. I recuperated wonderfully. I wiggled my tail plenty to show how glad I was to be alive. I ran up and down the stairs following Miss Evelyn, and pranced all over the house on tip toes. The lack of hair on my neck, arms, stomach, chest and back from wearing a too-tight harness didn't stop my TLC at the Bibb home. On February 6, Mr. Bob and Miss Debbie Killian came to pry me away from Miss Evelyn. She didn't want to let me go, but Miss Debbie INSISTED, so off I went to Asbury. I know that I was loved and wanted here as well. I received plenty of attention. I began to have kidney problems and continued to digress over the next couple of months. Mr. Bob and Miss Debbie finally agreed to let me go to sleep in their arms of love on April 21, 2004. Thank you Alabama Boston Terrier Rescue, I will forever be grateful.
— Miss Lucy "Athena" Lou Bibb Killian

Miss Jessie Mae
~ Requiescat In Pace ~
2 May 2004
Jessie came to us from the Hartselle Shelter. The daughter of the owner had taken her to the shelter to be put to sleep.  The owner had Alzheimer’s Disease, and the daughter took away her companion and probably the only thing the lady could remember.   I think that was over a year ago.  She was ten then.  Despite her disabilities, she loved to play with her toys.  She was quite a spirited little girl and maybe the prettiest one we have had.  It was time for her to go .  She seemed so peaceful when she joined Oscar, Ellie, Lucy, Sadie, Phebe, and Penny.
